Background
The Muslim Society of University of Greenwich was formed on the Greenwich Maritime campus in the 1999-2000 academic year after the failure of individual efforts to secure prayer space. The Society succeeded in securing a prayer room that relieved Muslims from the distress of searching for a concealed and safe place to pray. We went on to organise Ramadan Iftar, Eid events, seminars and regular sporting events. Society membership rapidly expanded and today we are a well-established student society -- certainly the most ethnically diverse in the University. The society members have participated in a parliamentary event and a national interfaith symposium, we developed working relationships with local community and human rights organisations. We also developed and adopted a solid constitution, set up an Alumni wing, extended Jummah service to the Medway Campus and we are beginning to attract speakers of international status.
Currently the Society has 649 associate members. |
